renewing car insurance

just wondering, i just had my renewal notice for my car insurance. its gone up by nearly £200(omg i know) despite having more no claims. i went onto a insurance website and put all the details as before when i took the insurance out last year and the quote was cheaper. what i'm wondering is. is there anything stopping me from cancelling my current insurance and taking out the new insurance which is with the same company? if anyone could hel[p me out i would be grateful. ta andy...

  • I did this with the Post office insurance and they allowed me to do it. Just remember to cancel your existing insurance before it renews.

I have a similar problem and i would like to know if you can let your current policy expire and then buy a new policy from the same insurer the minute (literally) the current one expires?

I am with the post office and there renewal wasnt great - not as bad as 200pounds up tho! Although I havent checked what a new policy with would cost, im sure it would be a lot cheaper and I would also like a new policy with them also as they have there 50pound cheque back offer.

Obviously this means that the car will be un-insured for a very short while though ;).

    Any thoughts anyone?
  • Normally insurance runs out at midnight and I think the new one will start from midnight too.

With the post office if you try and renew it online with the cheaper quote they will ask you to ring them and they will do it over the phone, you just need to quote the reference number that you get online. I have just recieved my £50 today

S79 you need to tell the post office you don't want to renew your insurance and you can pre insure you car beforehand with a new policy, you just obviousy chose the date when you want your insurance to start
  • ok thanks. i will try that. i wonder how they will take it if i tell them about it and see what quote they come up with after that. this from a company called budget lol.
  • They will try and give you a quote on the phone but you do not have to accept it, tell them you want the quote on line, you should have a reference number

Had the same issue with Budget. I called them and told them it was cheaper online. They accpeted it and gave me the cheaper price as my renewal. no need to cancel and reapply.

Direct line told me to take out a new policy on line when I phoned them to say their renewal quote was too expensive!

The joke was when they wrote, from the new policy, to ask me to send proof of NCD from the old policy!

You don't need to worry about following this (slightly dangerous - should you have an incident whilst uninsured) timetable.

You can take out your new insurance policy in advance of your current one expiring.

You give the date you want the new insurance to start when applying, and then your cover won't commence until your requested date.

Before you renew, check out the insurers via Quidco - you could get quite a lot of cash back.

I tried to take out out a new policy with the post office online, but it prevented me from trying to do it saying i was already an existing customer and that i should speak to the renewals team.
Is my only option to trythe midnight thing, or should i just look for a diffrent insurer? any thoughts on halifax & morethan? morethan were espcially cheap but ive heard there a nightmare if u do actaully claim. Havent heard much about halifax car insurance tho?
The problem if i go down the renewal route i miss out on post offices £50 cashback and quidco.
    P.s. it runs out tonite!!
