is my friend entitled to carers or attendance allowance?

hi there,
I have a friend who is in receipt of incapacity benefit and DLA herself (i think its middle care) and she has 4 children. She has a 26 year old son with OCD who works part time and gets DLA and working tax credit. She has a 24 year old who works full time and has Aspergers Syndrome and her 17 year old who is still at college has a specific learning difficulty.
Would she be entitled to a carers allowance for the 26 year old? She spends a lot of time and energy caring for the family but it is only the 26 year old who gets DLA so was thinking it may only be him that she could get a carers or attendance allowance for. I'm not sure what rate he gets but think it is middle care.
Any help or advice for my friend would be great. Thanks, Karfy xxxxxxxxxx

Incapacity Benefit and Carers Allowance are overlapping benefits so you can only receive one of them and are therefore paid the higher of the two so she could not claim Carers Allowance.0

Ok thanks, that makes sense.0

If she claims income support a claim for Carers Allowance would entitle her to an additional premium if he receives middle rate DLA care or higher, in this case it would be definately worth applying for Carers Allowance. If the 26 year old qualifies for the criteria of Carers Allowance (under 16 hours work, earns under the earnings limit and provides enough care for his Mother for enough hours etc) he could claim Carers Allowance for looking after his Mother but if she is on Income Support she would loose her severe disability premium. One day I might be more organised...........

thanks lil me, she doesnt get income support so don't think she could claim and get any premium but maybe her son could claim, that is definitely worth looking into. :j0

The carers premium may entitle her to Income Support, all depends what other income she has (if her partner is working etc she probably would not qualify) To be honest she would probably best off speaking to a Welfare Rights advisor or similar giving them the full details. One day I might be more organised...........

She doesn't have a partner and gets very nervous talking to people due to anxiety so I'm trying to find a way to help her as much as I can so she gets as much help as she can. Do you think they would talk to me on her behalf so that then I could give her the correct forms and information? That would be great if she could get a carers' premium and that would entitle her to income support, even if it was 25p as then she would qualify for other things.0
