To Rent a Rug Doctor?

Hi,

Has anyone rented out a Rug Doctor (the ones you can hire in focus, supermarkets etc), are they worth the £25 + to rent out for a day?

Thanks

we rented a rug doctor from co-op £20 per day in december
the cost of the cleaning fluid is rather expensive
we had already got the cleaning fluid which we bought from focus when they were selling off during closure
the rug doctor did a decent job but it takes a day to dry out
but you could do the whole house in a day

You might want to chckout your local hire shop. They often do good weekend deals or single day deals and offer a wide range of sizes plus good advice.

saw another post on here that said the stardrops (about £1 from all good supermarkets) works well. just tell the people at the hire place you have detergent already.

I just wanted to say Thanks to everyone for your help, I think we will save ourselves at bit of money and go for the stardrops and give the rug doctor a try. Only have a couple of rugs to do, so hopefully should have the job dome in a few hours.

I have to say that I rented a rug doctor the other week and used Stardrops as a cheaper alternative to the detergent they sell and it was a disaster. It didn't clean the carpet at all, all the marks etc that were there stayed there and if anything looked even worse. I had to use 1001 afterwards to get a glaring mark out.

Also don't put too much of it in or it foams everywhere. That was just my experience.
  • Some more advice...

Yes Rugdoctors should make your carpets come up well, and £25 for two days is normal.

The detergent they sell is fantastic used neat on any stains in the carpet (red wine, oil etc) so I think it is worth it, but I haven't used any other.

However, whenever you wash your carpet it will reduce the ability it has to repel stains, so when you wash it, it will get dirtier again much more quickly. That said, if you need your carpet cleaning then you probably have little choice anyway.

I used Carpet cleaner from the poundshop - it worked great. I am sure some of the DIY shops do the rug doctor cheaper - shop around.

  • If your looking to do your carpets more than once a year ive just got a bargain from TJ Hughes, the Vax deluxe carpet cleaner is on sale for £49.99 i know its a little bit more than renting a rug doctor, but if your going to do it more than once it will save money and it comes with a bottle of cleaner that should do the whole house.

I hired a rug doctor to clean my carpets and it worked well - tbh though I'd be a bit worried about using stardrops, I think they're quite strict about you using the proper stuff, and I wouldn't want to risk it should there be a problem ... However, it might be worth asking on Freecycle to see if anyone's got any bit of detergent that they didn't use. I didn't find it *that* expensive though (£4-ish for a small container, which did my 2 bed house) and as I said I think it's a small price to pay for peace of mind ...

One tip - shop around for prices as they do vary. We tried Morrisons, Homebase and the Co-op and found Morrisons to be the cheapest for us. Also, if you hire the cleaner on a Saturday morning for 24 hrs, we got it till Monday for free as a Sunday isn't classed as a full day. Worth seeing if you can do that.
