using less gas...

I will try to be 'basic' then!!
The radiator valves are the TRVs I wrote about in Post #5 and they are crucial in setting the temperature of individual rooms.
I don't know what CH control system you have, but believe me a temperature of 14.5 to 15C(58F) is not bearable for most people and is below the legal minimum temperature for a workplace.
The only way to measure the actual temperature in a room is to use a proper 'stand alone' thermometer.
That said, if the system works for you then fine, but i will bet that the temperature of your living rooms is way above 15C
We dont use a stand alone thermometer, just the control on the CH system, and to be honest either 14.5 or 15 inbetween the temperature coming on in is perfectly fine for us. Whether it would be an illegal temperatureto work in, I dont run a business from home, so can only go on personal experience.xx rip dad... we had our ups and downs but we’re always be family xx0 -
If you're cooking on gas (or any other means), always put a lid on the pan, the food will cook more quickly and you'll consume less gas in the process.
I have a poll / discussion on Economy 7 / 10 off-peak usage (as a % or total) and ways to improve it but I'm not allowed to link to it so have a look on the gas/elec forum if you would like to vote or discuss.:cool:

I think that i have been given the wrong advice,ive just had my annual gas service check,and was told by the bloke that i really needed the therm in the hall on full(30) to get the maxium benefit for it ,cus i had turned it down to bout 23.I also thought that by turning the radiators down by the knob at the side that this only altered the temp of the room not the amount of gas it generated through it.so i thought it wouldnt make a diff if it were on 2 or 6,that was just how hot you wanted the room.Forgive me if this sounds quite ashtonishing to you,but ive always thought this.My gas bill for the quarter which i had 2 weeks ago came in at £185.which i know is high,but i hate being cold,so i put the heating on,i only have this running on gas,no cooking ect.We have a combi-boiler which i leave the switch on for the water at all times.Is this correct to do so??Will it save me money to have the system run on a timer or just wen i need it.Please dont reply in technical terms,as im a mother and the kids have screwed my head.!thankyou.0

Well to keep it simple.
Firstly to have the wall thermostat in the hall set to 30C is not a problem, as long as you have TRVs fitted to each radiator(which you appear to have - the knob at the side)
It is these TRVs that you need to set correctly as they set the temperature in the room.(which you had worked out)
The higher you have them, the more gas you will use.(which is where you were wrong) You can only get more heat by burning more gas.
So you should shut them off(or right down) in the bedrooms during the day, and only have the ones in the living room as high as you need to be comfortable.
You should try to run both your CH and Hot water on timers. The more time they are off, the more money you save.0 -
So much appriciated,i know it sounded odd to ask,but you answered me politley,and i thank-you for that.I have been having the radiators on upstairs,as well as all the ones downstairs,as i thought that if your running the some ,then you might as well be running them all.I thought that you wouldnt be saving that much to make a difference.Any how it becomes that hot upstairs,that if i havent switched the heating off by at least an hour b4 the kids get to bed that the room they sleep in is far to hot for them anyhow.Also we are in a newly renovated house,and the last house was soo cold upstairs,with the heating on all day,that i havent got used to this system yet,but now i will be turning them off,and saving myself some money hopefully.Here's to a cheaper gas bill.Thank-you.0
