Building Units - Good Value Timber?

Hi All,

I have a 'carpenter' building a few built-in storage units for me at the moment - and we want it to look 'nice' (and yet cost very little to make!) -

I've just ordered (but can cancel) 16 BIG sheets of 28mm Timberboard from Wickes at £38 each - which makes it a pricer project than I'd like -

Are there any alternatives (Still 28mm-ish thick if poss) to this (ideally MUCH cheaper) - I don't want to use MDF or anything like that :)

Urgent advice appreciated :)

Cheers

Jim

You might get a better price from a specialist timber merchant.

    I agree with Mistah.

Wickes and all DIY Superstores are pricey for their timber. Specialisttimber merchants and local timber suppliers often offer a much better price and will normally deliver.

28mm is flipping thick. I don't think I've EVER used that thickness in 28 years on my tools! Could you not use 18mm or 22mm? MUCH cheaper - especially from proper timber merchants.

Come to think of it 28mm is pretty damn thick.

I have heard that I can get a 40% discount from builders merchants and timber merchants if I say I am 'trade'. Does anyone know how this works? Do I just need a business card or will they ask for accounts or something?

Most will tell you where to go! They will normally require proof unless they know you. Even then the discounts aren't always that good - I wish they were.
They generally ask for two invoices from known trade companies, or proof that you are setting up a business, unless they have known you because you've been going there for a while.
