Car hissing sound when reversing problem?!?

Hi all,

I have a 1.4 Fiesta Ghia and it makes a hissing sound when reversing the car. The sound is like a gas cannister releasing gas.

Does anyone know if this is a problem or whether its just a side effect of the car?

Does it do it in reverse gear only, or also when rolling back and in neutral?

Oh, it only happens when reversing. You can clearly hear it if you have the wheel on full lock when reversing.

I think you should get someone to stand outside the car to determine which end of the car the noise is from (front or rear), and also which side.

Right now it could be a number of things, find out where it is on the car.

It might be a simple hissing noise from the steering hydraulic pump and you hear it only when reversing because then the car is quiet. Try to do a full lock while the car is stationary and see if you can hear it. I might be wrong.

you might be right,i would say its more the steering causing a hissing noise rather than reverse gear.

Almost certainly this, the steering pumps are quite noisy on full lock.
