Sticking Door

Options
Does anyone have any advice how to fix my door. It is an internal door. The last few days when it is getting closed it is sticking (banging against the frame in parts mostly next to the handle). My boyfriend sanded it a bit the other day which helped but it is sticking again. Neither of us are very DIY minded so any advice much appreciated!

Thanks

  • Hi ashley0611,

The door could be swelling due to dampness in the air! Or the hinges could be coming loose!

Check to ensure that the hinges are not coming loose, if they are tighten the screws with a screwdriver.

If the door has swelled due to damp, then if you take too much wood off the door you can be left with a gap when the door dries out again!

It is best to plane a door rather than sand it as sanding will ony remove a small amount of wood, often it is better to plane the inside of the door frame, where it is catching as this means that if the door shrinks again, you will not see a gap like you would if you planed the door!

If it is sticking near the handles and lock as you say then I would try rubbing a little soap on it first, if that does not work then you will have to plane some wood away, unfortunately.

    Good luck
