Breakdown cover

This is one of the types of insurance that really confuses me. When I first started driving 7 odd years ago a colleague of mine suggested I went with Direct Line because they were quite cheap, so I did. I pretty much stuck with them until someone on here said about an insurance broker company who were offering breakdown for about £20.00 which I took up, but the following year it increased considerably so I cancelled it. Last year I got a years free breakdown cover with my insurance company but when I renewed this year it wasn't thrown in and they are now quoting me about £90.00.
The last couple of cars I have owned have been quite old and so I made sure the cover included homestart. The car I have at the moment feels more reliable but is still an R reg which probably works out about the same age as my last car when I got it. Now I'm confusing myself as to whether I should get homestart or not.
I'm also confusing myself over whether to go for someone like Autoaid because obviously it works out cheaper but know that I would never have the money in my bank account or a free credit card to put the costs on to claim back but the likes of RAC and the AA charge so much.
Is there a way I can try and look to see what cover would be best for me and who would be best to go with without overcomplicating things?
I apologise if this is on the wrong board and do feel free to move it.
