I would also be keen on keeping a car a knew if it was running ok. OP needs to think about what will need done in way of repairs in the near future.

Tyres, exhaust, brakes, discs, brake pipes, battery and then potentially more expensive things like alternators and cam belts etc. If these are all up to muster then it is probably better keeping it (devil you know and all that).

If you take Mandas figures then you might even come out of it with a few £.

This is exactly why we did it! ;)
"If" the OP only needs a door then they could just get one from a scrappy(hopefully the same colour as their car) if not consider having it sprayed or drive round with an odd door(I would, gives the car a little something I think;) ) Totally depends on your money situation and wether you care or not!
"If" there is more unseen damage then it may well be not worth it as could cost you more than the insurance company give you in the end to repair it.
Really OP needs to find out exactly what is wrong with the car and exactly what needs replacing! It could still be worth keeping the car and then selling the engine (If its ok mileage and looked after)and selling car for scrap, could still make you more money than just letting insurance company keeping the car.

    Hi,

Just to help you consider all the options THIS POST might possibly help.

Also HERE is a link directly to the government's site relating to the DVLA VIC checks - why you need one, how much they cost, and where you can get them done.

Edit to add THIS link for Copart/USG who are a major player in the salvage industry.

OP here. Currently waiting to hear back from the engineer to confirm figures and what cat write off is. Also have asked a local garage for estimate of cost of repair. Will make a decision based on this. Thanks for all the advice!

Just to update. Agreed to accept £750 for my old astra today. Decided to not go ahead with repair as seemed to be some damage to main bit of car and any resale value would be affected. Finally realised that I could get a hire car from the other party's insurance, mine never mentioned this, so now I need to start visiting car showrooms etc. My well be posting again for advice on economical, reliable family friendly type cars. Thanks again.

    Good decision I think.

    Cannot resists it:
    Family friendly, reliable cheap etc.

I took one a petrol of these to 120K miles and only spent £80 on a fuel pump outside routine maintenance. 4 star crash safety hard to come by elsewhere for £990 making it fit my description of family friendly for more than just space and it's lots of fun to drive too, shockingly close to even a new BMW 3 series for ride/handling. There are others similar up to around £1800. Good luck.
