Your account has bene hacked email - Smile Bank

I didn't know whether to put this here on in the techie board but I thought I would post it here.

I have just received an email with the title "Your Account Has Been Hacked.". The email says this:

Dear Smile Bank valued account holder,

We recently noticed one or more attempts to log in your Smile bank account from a foreign IP address and we have reasons to believe that your account was hacked by a third party .
If you recently accessed your account while traveling, the log in attempts may have initiated by you.

However if you are the rightful holder of the account, click on the link below and submit, as we try to verify your account.

Please *then a link to click*to login into your Smile bank account and then fill in the required informations. This is required for us to continue to offer you a safe and risk free environment.

If you choose to ignore our request, you leave us no choice but to temporally suspend your account.
We ask that you allow at least 48hrs for the case to be investigated and we strongly recommend not making any changes to your account in that time.

* Please do not respond to this email as your reply will not be received.

Thank you for your patience as we work together to protect your account.

As I recall I have never even heard of Smile Bank, let alone opened an account with them.
In the email it tells me where the log in attempt was from e.g. IP address and ISP but I removed them from the text for security reasons etc.

I think this is a phishing scam. Am I correct?
I received one the other week which was supposedly from Paypal but the email was sent to an email address I have never used with Paypal which was how I knew it was a scam.

I use Thunderbird for all my email accounts and with this Smile Bank email under the "To" column it does not have one of my email address but "Undisclosed recipients".

I thought I would just warn people as this does look very much like a phishing scam.

xx

*Edit*
I just noticed I spelt "been" wrong in the title. Sometimes my fingers run away with me.lol.

Its an online bank - do you actually use them? If you do - have you tried going to their site and logging in normally to see if its blocked?

    Hey.

No I don't. Never heard of them. I did a bit of research and found this: http://www.millersmiles.co.uk/report/6894 which confirms that it is a phishing email.

  • In simple - if you don't use them and get an email from them - delete it straight away. I've had them from Barclays, HSBC, RBS, etc.. and I only have an account with Natwest so I know they are phishing.

Glad you found that out :)

I had one from HSBC the other day ..... typical phising email with a 'click on this link' bit at the end.

It's a shame that we can't reply directly to the emails ....... with two words .... the second of which being "off" !!!!

I agree with you there.I never normally get phishing emails. This is only the second one I've had. I normally get the "We have found your lost relative in Nigeria. Please send money"ones or "You have won $30,000. Please send $50 so that you can receive it" Oh, and the usual spam. :/
