yes..in safe mode even if the virus software does not remove it then you can manually delete them

it's worth downloading the Microsoft Anti spyware

    http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=321CD7A2-6A57-4C57-A8BD-DBF62EDA9671&displaylang=en

it's free and works well, give you live protection as well

and downgrade your sons user profile if he has Admin rights :)

doing what i said with setting IE to delete the temp files each time you close it should prevent future problems :)

Sorry another question - about CCleaner this time!

I've downloaded it and run it. The delete index.dat files didn't seem to be in advanced but under Internet Explorer at the top of items listed in cleaner settings (tick boxes). I didn't use the advanced option for clearing as it came up with lots of warnings one of which I think means I will lose all icons on my desktop and I didn't think I needed it as all I want to do is get rid of all temp files including that wretched index.

Anyway it said it had cleared everything but when I looked the index.dat folder and a few others (which wouldn't delete before but are more or less empty) are still sat there in Content.IE5. I ran CCleaner again just in case but it says they are gone

    All advice appreciated :D

p.s. I'm still impressed by CCleaner - there were some other files in Real Player History among which were some to do with my son which it found and cleaned out. Lets just say  is the word I am looking for to describe them. Does anyone want a 12 year old boy?

I have no problem with index.dat myself and do not delete it, I only use ccleaner to tidy up temp files..

is the box ticked for delete index.dat in ccleaner if you really want to delete it ??
