i know nothing about computers,so hope someone can help
my son's laptop won't work when he switches it on,think it must be something to do with windows he has windows xp.
a blue screen flashes up and says the following
a problem hsa been detected and windows has been shut down,to prevent damage to your computer
unmountable boot volume
if this is the first time you have seen this stop error screen, restart your computer.if this screen appears again follow these steps.
check to make sure any new software or hardware is properly installed.
if this is a new installation ask your hardware or software manufacturer for any windows updates you might need.if problem continues disable or remove any newly installed hardware or software, disable bios memory options such as caching or shadowing.
if you need to use safe mode to remove or disable components, restart your computer, press f8 to select advanced startup options,
and then select safe mode.
then a screen with different modes comes up, and he has tried starting in different modes, but no luck
anyone any ideas

Something like hirens bootcd maybe of use to you. it can recover situations like this, though it isn't guaranteed. Do a google search for it.0

Where did you get XP from in the first place? If it came preinstalled you should have got some disks with the machine.0
