Windows Vista RAM

Don't forget to defrag your machine regularly, it keeps the system running smoothly. Your rating is ok but your graphics card is letting the side down a little bit. Are you going to be using this machine for gaming at all?0

What the hard drive thrashing is is Vista indexing the drives, not to do with RAID. Right click on the drive in My Computer, then click Properties. At the bottom there should be a checkbox labelled "Index this drive for faster searching". Uncheck that and click apply.
The previous posts about how Vista handles memory are correct. What's the point in having unused RAM? It will hold it and release it as and when a program requires it.0 -
be_alright, it has already been established that the thrashing was defragmentation. I would be worried about a machine hammering the HDD with just indexing.0

Funny that as my machine just gets on with it and doesn't hammer the disks at all. Maybe Vista Ultimate handles it differently?0

It could be. Superfetch, Readyboost and Indexing can all contribute to the thrashing in the first few days while Vista arranges the computer, but does die down after a couple of days.
I don't get any thrashing at all any more unless the computer is on a scheduled defrag in the wee hours of the morning, or a scheduled virus scan.0
