Help - Bank withdrawing settlement offer

Can the bank (via their solicitors) withdraw an offer of settlement that was made 6 weeks earlier? We received an offer of settlement in full on 7 Feb which they were going to put into my husband's account. Trouble was, we closed that account a couple years ago (because of all the bad experiences of such Bank and the charges!) and spent the next 4 weeks calling them constantly to ask that they send a cheque instead. They fobbed us off with "will call you back" and finally got "a revised letter is in the post" . But that never came, instead after 2 weeks of silence, we get a letter saying they are withdrawing the offer of settlement on the basis that the claim has been stayed by the Court pending the outcome of the OFT test case bla bla bla.... Can they really do that? I would understand if we hadn't got so far, but the hodl up was at their end and was their error for not paying us by cheque. This makes me even madder! GRRRR.
