Hi
I have made the classic mistake of messing around with my computer settings last night.
I am running Vista Business and read an article to improve Vista, it made some changes, it is now not running right and I cannot find the website again.
One problem is that it fails to connct to my wireless network on startup, I will look into that later.
The bigger problem is that I appear to have lost Aero!!
When I go to the colour and appearance settings I no longer get the orginal Vista set up just some basic boxes, so I have no control over the Transparency Effect, which was there before the change last night.
I only cannot find a restore point.
Can anybody tell me how to get the proper options on Appearance back as I now have an awful, dull grey appearance on the screen.
Thanks
Martin

Try control panel/appearance and personalization/personalization/themes and in the drop down box select windows vista and apply. The other options should then reappear.0

Hi
Thanks for the response.
That is where things start to go wrong.
On getting to the theme options, the only option I have showing is , My Current Theme, Windows Classic or Browse, all the other options have gone.
If all else fails I may have to recover from a back up I have on a portable drive.
I also still have the extra problem of having to recover the wireless network each time I log on, which started at the same time.
I just wish I could remember the web site I visited.

Hello, no need to worry, it should not be anything major.
1st Idea:
Go to Start> Control Panel> Classic View> Performance Infomation and tools. Click on 'Update my score'
If that dont work try:
Click start, then right click on computer and select properties.
Click advanced system settings, press continue if you get a little box.
On the 'Advanced' tab click 'Settings' on the performance section and then click the little box next to 'let windows choose whats best for my computer'
Then hit ok.
You should have aero back, let me know if you dont after trying both methods.
Good Luck !0 -

There's a "restore" option on Vista.
You can take it back the computer back to yesterday before the changes were made.
Some other poor unfortunate who has Vista can probable list the steps required.0 -
To turn on Vistas Aero feature , right click on your desktop and select Personalize, now from this menu select Window Color and
Appearance, make sure enable transparency box is ticked.
at the bottom of the page you should see the following (Open classic appearance properties for more color options) click on this, select windows Aero from the list and click apply. Good luck

Thanks for the further replies.
I am at work now so it will be tongith before I can look again.
I will have a look at the restore option, but of memory I tried that before and it wanted to do a full restore.
With regards to the second reply, I have tried that and I get so far and then I appear to have lost all the options including Aero, I only have windows classic.
I would like to try to right click on Computer and see if that helps, but so far, no joy.
I will be trying again tonight.
Thanks for the replies.

You've gone and turned off most of the services....muppet. You can't turn on Aero because you turned off the service running it. Likewise the wireless because you've probably disables the wireless zero configuration service.
Go to this website and go through the list, setting them back to what it says are the default settings or "safe" settings.

And leave what you don't understand alone in future. If you don't understand what the instructions on these tweak sites are telling you what to do and you don;t understand what the thing you're about to disable does, leave alone.0 -

Made that for you, it may or may not solve your peoblem, it could be many things including what Conor said.0 -
Thank you TechTerry and Conor, all is now working again
I made the changes suggestd by Conor, I cannot believe how many things were wrong, I admit to being a total muppet
That did not solve the problem but at least it put things back as they should be.
After being unable to right click on Computer, I managed to and did as TechTery said, and everything came back.
I hope now all will be ok, no more playing for me.
I just keeping reading all these bad things about Vista and I think I am becoming paranoid, I may even use the free option of going back to XP, not decided yet.
Thanks again for all the help.
