From 1 June: Free London bus & tram travel rules change for 11-15 year olds

Updated: Monday 19 May 2008

What's this about?

Heads-up! From Sunday 1 June, all 11-15 year olds who use London's buses or trams will need to have a 'Zip' (photographic Oyster card) to get free travel. From then on, anyone 11 and above who doesn't have a photocard will be expected to pay the adult cash rate, which, at £2 a time, will soon mount up.

It's free to get a Zip, so if you know anyone between 11 and 15 using London's network, urge them or their guardian to get the card as soon as possible, especially as it could take several weeks to receive it.

How to get a Zip

Anyone aged 10 years and 11 months, and less than 16 can get one.
  • If you live in London: Application forms are available at Post Offices or you can request one online or by calling 0845 330 9876. Once completed, it'll need to be taken to a Post Office with a valid passport, ID card (from a European Economic Association country) or birth certificate, plus a passport-sized photo.

The card will then be sent to your address in around two weeks. As 1 June is under this time frame, you'll need to get your skates on and hope to get it quick.
  • If you live outside of London: You'll need to request a visitor's form online and return it with a passport photo and £5 deposit at least four weeks before needing to use it. It can then be collected from a Travel Information Centre in London of choice but you'll need to take a passport/birth certificate or EEC ID card there too.

The £5 deposit will be credited on the card for PAYG use or you can opt for a refund.
Additional information on the Zip scheme is available on Transport for London's website.

I'm so glad this is coming in!:)

Hopefully it'll mean that days of kids pushing in front of paying customers and intimidating elderly people on the bus will be a memory.

This is a right pain in the proverbial. We are visiting London with our 12 year old daughter on the weekend of 31st May and 1st June which means we can't get a pass in time.:mad::mad::mad:

Check the details - but I am fairly sure this zip thingey is mainly for children travelling on their own.

Children travelling with parents who hold a travelcard should still be able to get a one day travelcard for £1 (I think) and will not need the photo id
