Renting with Pets

Is there any answer to this one? My son is desperately seeking accommodation in the South East which will also allow him to keep his well behaved dog. He has offered an extra deposit and to have the accommodation professionally cleaned on departure but after trawling all adverts and agencies, has had no luck at all.

How about putting an ad in the paper "accommodation wanted with well behaved dog in tow". I found my first house like this!

Has he looked at houses or flats? Flats usually impossible, houses--ask agency to ask the landlord specifically? Offer to pay x months upfront? We had no real problems, it just took longer, flats were totally no go though.

Otherwise maybe look at lodgings, friends/contacts of workmates who have dogs.
    Anytime;)

That's probably due to the lease. Lots of flats particularly those in blocks make it clear you can't have pets like cats and dogs. Lots of people ignore it but if you annoy your neighbours they can hold you to ransom.

Though saying that some garden flats in converted houses and some maisonettes you will be allowed to have cats and dogs.
    I'm not cynical I'm realistic :p

Thankyou. He is looking just at houses because he needs a garden for the dog. He has tried every agent and private LL he can find but most of them will not even respond with a return call and the rest have given a flat no, despite offering a higher deposit and to clean carpets etc. It seems that the South East do not have a problem with renting.
  • I think his mistake was to tell them upfront. It's better just to view places you like and when you find one you want, say you'll take it as long as you can have a dog. Either they say yes or they take the risk of a void period.

The trouble with doing this is that there's usually no shortage of people to move into the property who don't have pets.

This is one of the problems myself and my partner have. We are relocating to West Sussex soon and have chosen to tell the agents that we have 2 cats. This saves finding the perfect place and being ready to sign the dotted line but being told no pets!

We have found that paying 6 months rent in advance sways some people. Also maybe have something written in to the tenancy agreement to say you will have the place cleaned to a professional standard and provide reciepts for this when you leave to ensure the place is pet free when you leave.
