DVD player problems / possible upgrade

I've got a Goodmans DVD Player with 5.1
I think it might be dying, it plays for about 50 minutes with no problem then it sticks and makes whirring noises. Any suggestions?
If it is dying, which is better to upgrade to a Blu Ray or a recorder? Do either of these support 5.1?
Thanks

Most dvd players will play 5.1 and dts, has it a built in amplifier with all the speakers attached directly to it?0

unless you want to have the latest technology, just buy another dvd player/recorder, i presume if you already have a dvd player, u will have a collection of dvd`s, these will not play on a blue ray player, for sure eventually blue ray will probably be the way to go, but not much point at the moment unless you have money to burnI've got a Goodmans DVD Player with 5.1

Ah I see, I thought Blu Ray did play DVD, won't bother then. Have quite a nice collection of DVDs building up (tend to buy older ones to replace videos / off the tele jobs for under £5 a go).No longer using this account for new posts from 20130 -
Have you tried a cleaner on it? Depending on it's age and how often it's been used it might just need a quick clean with one of those lens cleaning discs. Would certainly be cheaper than a new DVD player!0

You can get a PS3, Blueray player, DVD player and Games console all in one, but it does NOT come with a built in amp.0

Haven't tried a cleaner in a while, but it's about six years old.
Not keen on the PS3 really as I've got several PS2 games which won't play on itNo longer using this account for new posts from 20130
