Freezing HM tortillas?

I made a load of tortillas (HFW recipe) on Sat, but didn't use all the dough. What was left I kept in the fridge and used it tonight to make the last couple of tortillas. However the dough had gone a bit grey and was incredibly stretchy. Anyhow, I persevered and they tasted fine. My question is, if I was to make a load of dough and then want to freeze the tortillas, are they best frozen raw, or frozen after cooking and reheated on use?

  • Never ever freeze something after cooking it!
    It's best to freeze them raw because if they are cooked, there is a high chance of a stomach bug spreading like salmanela.

  • Personally, I would have to disagree with ilovecompanies, I would cook them first, and freeze them with something to stop them sticking between. when you take them out of the freezer, just pop them under the grill to have them as good as fresh! I have done this many times....

    Don't know if I explained myself properly, what I meant was flat bread, no filling, just the bread itself.

    I haven't made then fresh but my experience is that the problem (sometimes) in freezing is the amount of moisture in the flour. If there’s some at all they will stick together and that’s a royal pass in the whatever. Nothing like a holey tortilla. Good on ya for making them although they are so cheap i know i wouldn't bother...but then again i live 25K from the Mexican border...hee..hee

    My SIL freezes them after cooking, and never has a problem. You need to make sure you separate them with thin plastic though.

    My mum uses cut-up carrier bags to separate food in the freezer :D

    Hi there

    I makes loads of tortillas and find i prefer to freeze the raw dough in balls, and then just grab them out of the freezer in a morning to defrost... mine also roll out bigger after freezing the dough too.
    I usually make 3 batches of dough at a time -they only takes minutes to roll and cook..
    when i froze them ready cooked i found it a bit hit n miss warming them up without drying them out
    -6 -8 -3 -1.5 -2.5 -3 -1.5-3.5
  • Well I'm trying my best to cook the majority of things from scratch, I want to try tortillas but can I freeze the ones we don't use? My son likes them for packed lunch so I'd like to make a batch.
    I'm trying so hard to be thrifty, but it doesn't come naturally. You lot are an inspiration!

    dont see why not! but, I would put a sheet of greaseproof or baking paper between each one before freezing. That way you can just remove one or two to defrost. (you prob know this - that info was for newbies).

    They are dead easy to make and freeze well but as meritaten says, separate them with something :)
