£350 to spend. laptop

Hi.

My mate wants a laptop and has around £350 to spend, will go to £375.
He does not want anything special, just the usual, surfing, poker, blah blah

I have tried to get him to get a macbook as I can get hold of them half price, but because of the screen size he is adament, he will not have one, also he will not entertain the idea of not having a black colour. I have explained all the benifits of macs, but is still not having it, and will not be told.
I have no idea on anything that is not mac, so need a bit of help.

So with that in mind, can I get an opinion on this laptop from tesco direct please.

The usual, is it any good, or could he do better for the money he has?
It just comes into his budget with a £5 discount code, and then possibley quidco on top.

Thank you
All hail the Moyesiah.

Seems good to me. If he doesn't want to do anything graphics heavy, you may be better off going with a cheaper model without the dedicated sound and graphics cards. Or is this me talking through my hat again?

P.S. My only objection is Vista. I would go direct to HP and get one with XP pro, but that's just me.

Vista is a far superior operating system in every single regard so I don't know where you are coming from. There are a couple of annoyances but they can be easily worked around.

If I hadnt recently brought one for £350 for similiar spec I would have brought this. and saved £80 quid.

Normally laptops don't come this cheap for a Dual core processor and Vista Home premium.

If you want, another 1gb Memory stick can be brought for around 15quid from crucial.com

Does this laptop have a built in Wifi card. It is just that I have a wireless router at home. It follow your link and read the page but could not understand most of the technical terms.

    Thanks

For me the Toshiba has better Spec for a cheaper price.

It has a Dual Core Processor this hasn't
It has a bigger hard drive
It has Vista Home Premium installed (Costs at least £50 more than Basic if brought OEM or Anytime upgrade)
    It has a Firewire port.

only thing is the ram which is dirt cheap to buy. 1GB ram over 2GB, which if brought for around £15 would still work out cheaper.
  • Thanks for the help.
He went for the HP. He had a look at some others, but decided the laptop had to be all black, and seeing hows it gets a thumbs up, he thought he may as well get it.
    All hail the Moyesiah.
