Scans i had failed to pick up a hypoplastic left heart syndrome on one baby and a cleft palette on another. So having the scans isn't always accurate.0

signed. i didnt even know some people didnt get this scan... i have mine in 2 weeks time but i thought it was something everyone had.
for those who seem to only see it as a way of considering abortion, its not, its better to think of it more as trying to give the baby a check up to ensure all is going well. very reassuring for us mums to be.0 -
Most women are offered a detailed scan at about 20 weeks to check that their baby is developing normally.
Ultimately this scan looks for anomalies but in addition to your suggestion of selective abortion it can pick up issues that will ensure the pregnancy can survive (ie amnionic fluid / the placenta functioning & positioning / incompetent cervix) as well issues with baby's health that may need surgery or treatment after birth, or even possibly surgery in the womb.
Agreed!
This scan is very important!
I too was not aware that it wasn't available to all.

Either the scans should be offered to all OR to those considered high risk. We can't save NHS money by allowing some women to slip through the net due to where they live.
The scans are important not just to detect problems with the baby, but also the placenta. It would be dangerous for a woman to go into labour with placenta previa for example and a scan will allow doctors to keep an eye on a low lying placenta to ensure that if it hasn't moved out of the way of the cervix that the baby can be born safely by section.
It's not about selective abortion. And since many of the problems it can detect have no particular 'risk group' the sensible option is to offer to all.
A girl I was in hospital with after having my second baby was taking home a beautiful little boy that wouldn't have been here were it not fo the 20 week scan. They found a major physical problem and they had the equipment and surgeons etc ready to deal with him when he was born and he was going to be just fine.May all your dots fall silently to the ground.0 -
Scans picked it up with my friends baby and he was born in a specialist hospital, given the first of the three operations needed to cure it. Sadly he died 11 days later but thanks to the scan he at least had a chance.Scans i had failed to pick up a hypoplastic left heart syndrome on one baby and a cleft palette on another. So having the scans isn't always accurate.
Here we all get the scans and for the small cost it should be open to everyone.Barclaycard 3800

i dont know about england, but i dont think this petition applys to scotland as we automatically get two scans 1 at 12 weeks and one at 19 weeks. i agree these are vitally important for mums to know whats going on with baby. but also vital for doctors to be prepared at the birth if they know there is a serious problemmy boots and tesco addictions are costing me a fortune
