Credit card fraud attempt

Several weeks ago I received a phone call from M&S about an application for a credit card, which was a surprise as I hadn't applied for one of their cards. This was passed on to their fraud department who gave me a few more details about the applicant. They had used my name and given my work phone number, but had listed addresses that I had not lived at, had given bank details that were not mine and have given a date of birth that was not mine.

I thought nothing more of this as M&S said that they would reject the application. However, yesterday, I received a similar phone call from another credit card company with essentially the same story. Again they said that they would decline the card.

My question is, is there anything that I can do about this? If someone is targeting me, maybe the next application will be processed and a card issued in my name. If they don't have my bank details then presumably they won't be able to get hold of my money, but it could mess up my credit history if there is a bad a debt against my name.

I'm at a loss as to what I can do, if anything.

You might want to consider CIFAS Protective Registration.
