Our usage yesterday (after switching off that extra switch on the boiler) was 29kwH (which I still think is high). Today, I have switched the whole system off, to see if that makes a big difference.

Now, obviously the charges Npower are going to make to us (up until this point and assuming it is our meter) are going to be astronomical. Can I be rather sneaky and erm... misread our meter this time until we are moved to a cheaper rate? Or can I switch suppliers after using my own meter reading.

29 units per day is certainly a lot less than the 100 you were using.

I'm thinking that maybe your top immersion heater thermostat was set too high and was probably on constantly 24/7 (a 3Kw heater on for 24 hours would use 72 units alone)

As regards miss-reading the meter I have used this trick when prices have gone up (overstated to pay more units at old prices) or gone down (understated to pay more units at new rates), but only ever by a few hundred units (which would be used before my next bill anyway)

I suppose the danger of grossley miss-stating your units is you COULD be meter read by the supply company

 I have a poll / discussion on Economy 7 / 10 off-peak usage (as a % or total) and ways to improve it but I'm not allowed to link to it so have a look on the gas/elec forum if you would like to vote or discuss.

    Thanks MP,

Last night we did not run any extras (you know washing machine etc), just the basics. I am beginning to suspect the boiler more and more.......

Once I have run a week without that top switch, I can estimate the price a bit better and get a new supplier.

Amazing how new developers and the electricity company use the slightest opportunity to rip you off. Oh ignorance is not bliss at all!

I would suggest to turn everything off (for just a few minutes) and check that the elec is still not going up with everything off. Just so you know whether to keep looking for something either inside (or outside) of the flat that's still on.

I remember a few stories before of heaters being left on in lofts and garages and also where neighbours have been hooked up to someone else's elecricity.
