hi there
i connect to the internet via a wireless usb adapter, at random intervals it will just time out and are unable to use the internet, when it has timed out, i check the status of the wireless icon ( the icon is showing as connected) and it reports back saying speed: 54.0 mbps signal strength: excellent status: connected.
i then check the router and all the correct lights are on, power, status, adsl, wireless .
what could be causing this problem?, i have tried another wireless usb adapter and get the same results, many thanks
(its is a windows xp machine )

What speed internet connection do you have? Cable or ADSL? It could be one of several issues so we need to do some trouble shooting.
Do you have security setup on your router?0 -
also, which router (someone on another board with a d-link with issues)? is the problem usually solved by rebooting the pc or routerUtinam logica falsa tuam philosophiam totam suffodiant.0

My laptop does the same sometimes. I don't know the technical cause, but 'repair' the wireless connection. Then it's fine for a good while. To do this right click on the computer icon near the clock and click repair and let it do its stuff.0
-
Make sure "Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power" isn't ticked for the adapter(s) or anything silly like that.
Last time I saw an issue like this it was the router, so it may be worth checking the manufacturer's website for any firmware updates, etc. Also, worth looking for adapter driver updates too.
One thing to try next time it happens...
1) Open a command prompt by clicking on Start/Run and then typing "cmd" (return).
2) In the DOS box, type "ipconfig /renew".
If that fixes it you could make a little desktop batch file doing the same thing for a dirty workaround.
Anyway, let us know how you get on and we may be able to offer better advice.
Good luck!0 -
Reboot the router. Always works for us.Ubuntu is an ancient African word, meaning: 'I can't configure Debian'.0

if rebooting the router always works for you, chances are you have a d-link or belkin router, chuck it on ebay and buy a different make, ie netgear/speedtouch.Utinam logica falsa tuam philosophiam totam suffodiant.0

We do have a netgear. Only happens once or twice a month.Ubuntu is an ancient African word, meaning: 'I can't configure Debian'.0

Main thing to find out when this happens is can you still access the router, if you can then the issue is on the other side of the router. If you cannot access the router then either the router is the problem or the PC/ wireless is the problem.0

its is adsl yes use WPA encryption, and yes its a d-link router0

Is it a D-Link DSL-G624T by any chance ?
I had one that kept doing that when it had been on for a few hours, seems that it was only doing it when it was getting quite hot.
Had it swapped for a new one which seems ok at the moment.
This one does not seem to get as hot.0
