Npower - Not quite tempting enough.

I keep checking energyhelpline on a regular basis to see if my BG (Click Energy 4) and Ebico (Equigas) combo can be beaten for my usage levels.

It seems even with the recent price rises it cannot, which in a way disappoints me but also reassures me that I am still in the right places.

Npower Sign-Online 10 is the only thing that comes near with a saving of around £30, but and it’s a big but the unit prices are not really any better than what I pay at present, they are tweaked differently compared to the BG (CL4 which now has a huge first tier charge) but the only real saving is by staying with Npower for a year to get the discounts. On unit charges alone I would be worse off with Npower.

It’s a bit of a gamble in this market that they will still be as good in 12 months time. Is it me just being cynical? What's to stop them raising the prices in 6 or 8 months time and then if you jump ship, you lose your discount or pay heavy unit charges?

Hmm, too much of a risk for £30 that’s for sure… J

Wouldn’t it be more in Npowers interest to be competative in the first place without all the added discounts?

Do they do that just to make it awkward and hard to budget for?

Surely they would capture more customers if they made the tarrif more attractive at the unit price levels...

  • Like Martin Lewis says for mobile phone contracts, don't base decisions on "cashback or offers" - find the cheapest tarrif first and then look for extras.

 I have a poll / discussion on Economy 7 / 10 off-peak usage (as a % or total) and ways to improve it but I'm not allowed to link to it so have a look on the gas/elec forum if you would like to vote or discuss.

Prices are likely to rise again in the Autumn.
