Guest House Etiquette

I'm spending 24 hours in a guest house out of necessity on my own for the first time, and I was wondering if someone can give me some pointers as to what goes on.

I know it sounds a daft question but i've never been anywhere on my own like that before and I haven't really left my hometown before.

Do you tip? Can you take a bottle of wine in to have with a takeaway? Can you take a takeaway to your room? I don't wish to sound anti-social but the very reason I'm spending the day in the guest house is because I'm going crazy being with my family at the moment with the rows and rather than blow up at them, or ask a friend if I can stay and have to go through it all to explain (very private person) I'm after 24 hours of pure me time with a bit of self pampering and some treats before coming back all rested on Sat.

Thanks ^_^

Bottle of wine is no problem - done it loads of times, although it might be worth asking the owner if he or she minds about the takeaway; some might not want their house smelling all night of curry for example!
Of course you could just sneak one in but then you're sleeping with the leftovers/packaging all night.
    Have a good break!

    Thanks very much :)

I'm not at all worried about spending time on my own as I thought I would be (I've never done anything like this! but I need to get away) I'm more worried about my dog missing me but I will check on him every so often.

It's a £20 room and I plan to make the most of it - I'd have loved to have had an ensuite but it was hard enough finding somewhere that could take me this short notice, never mind paying an extra 10/15 pounds just for a bathroom in the room. ...Do you share bathrooms or do most have sinks in the room and it's a case of make do?

Usually there is a shared bathroom, sometimes a sink in the room as well though - it just depends on the place.

I prefer to have an ensuite but some of the nicest places I've stayed have had shared bathrooms.

    Thanks :)

I would prefer an ensuite too but I searched long and hard for a few days to find the cheapest but pleasantest on the order. I can't really afford it as it is but I've tightened the belt and gone ahead if only for my own sanity.

u have locks on the doors, usually bathrms are shared, some b+bs have sinks in them, grab a bottle wine (screw top), so you dont have to hunt a corkscrew, take a face mask, nail polish etc, have a pamper urself ngt.

Hope it works out, I mean thinking time 4 u. x

Guest houses can really vary, I've stayed in a few over the years. Some of the best are where people rent out just one room, often for the company. I once stayed in a house in Cornwall with an elderly couple who did it for the company and invited us to share a bottle of wine in front of the TV with them on our first night. I've also stayed in some rough ones, usually those in very popular tourist areas where they always plan for trouble!

Enjoy your me time, we all deserve a bit of time alone. Perhaps in the future you might even be near enough to a travel lodge to make sure of one of their special £10 or £19 deals? They quite often have satelite TV and they all have en suite facilities and can be very very anonymous so no one to bother you at all.

Thanks very much for your help guys :)

Unfortunatley i've had to cancel it completely as a relative was taken into hospital but I will definatley keep the travelodge idea in mind if I can find a cheap way to travel over as the nearest one is approx 15ish miles away.

    Thanks everyone :)
