Whatever company you chose to connect the line will get charged £88 inc VAT from the wholesale operator Openreach. Now most providers will charge more for their own profit margins & cost for administrating this (staff, systems etc). The cheapest you'll find is around £110.

I do recall BT offering half price line installation if you take up an 18 month contract with them.

A word of warning though, whilst you might look for a company that charge less for installation it might cost you more in the long run through higher line rental/call charges.

    :)
Thanks for the tips and advise. Hmm maybe I will have to leave it then as I really cant afoord that. I didnt have to pay that much with virgin as I took there 3 for £30 offer. I only paid £25 deposit. But I have had so many problems with that company ie wrong billing, I had issues with each of the products. So I canx with them a month ago nearly and didnt have to pay the charge due to there wrong doing.Oh well, I will just have to go without. Thanks anyway though. I did ask BT if i could get the charge reduced but they said no.

Thanks for all the suggestions. It now turns out that despite BT's denial to begin with, the line is with BT. Apparently their records "weren't up to date". My friend is going to write a letter of complaint.

Whats the point of the letter? These things happen where by the address' on the system haven't been updated with the current information. Especially with new builds.

Errmmm new build? I'll re-iterate from the OP "It's an old address, not a new build.". We're talking probably 100 year old building here. How frequently should we allow BT to update their records? Phone line hasn't changed since at least the previous tenant. Sorry but if a physical BT line had been installed (god knows when) with a previous occupant I really don't believe that the records hadn't been "updated" until now or that as far as BT were concerned the address itself didn't exist. Incompetantly not added to the records I can more likely believe or entered incorrectly.

Edit: my mistake on my estimating, having a look at the history you can add another 200 years at least to my original estimate ;)

Have they started the 2 year contract requirement yet?
Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.
