Any views and opinons? before they break my door down?

hi guys and girls,

im hoping someone will be able to point me in the right direction or offer some good pointers.

I have recently moved into rented accommodation, I have been in there for about a month and a half now.

The previous tenant had a phone line with Virgin and it would seem that she hasn't cancelled the service and decided to use the service and in the process run up a bill of about £40 and left.

I wasn't too worried at the above state, except that today Virgin have ordered debt collectors so send a letter to my address, addressed to the previous tenant demanding money and that they will "visit" the flat to take payment.

any ideas as to what I can do to hopefully prevent them from calling( worst case scenario break down my door) and to find that the tenant no longer lives in the flat?

should I contact virgin to notify them that the previous tenant has left? I do think to myself, why do I have to spend my time notifying them? why should I do what the precious tenant should have done?

and advice would be greatly appreciated.

    Baliffs are not allowed to break anything, they are only allowed to enter the premises if someone lets them in.

    Yes the previous tenenat should have notified Virgin but they didn't and unless you really do want the baliffs visiting, then surely it is in your interests to advise them that the previous occupier has moved on.

    Call the debt collectors, saying that you are the new occupant of the flat & have no knowledge of the previous tenant, ask what you need to do to avoid a visit from the Brothers Grim. If they are no help, send a letter stating who you are & that you have know knowledge of the previous tenant.

    If they do come round, remember bailiffs are like vampires, once they've come into your house once, they can come in as often as they like, including breaking in.

    So this is important, you must not let them in the first time. That means if someone comes to the door that you don't recognise, keep them on the doorstep, do not let them set foot in your house. Do not leave the door open or ajar, lock it if you have to go get your ID to show who you are. If in doubt call the police & tell them there's an intruder in the house. (Don't mention bailiffs)

    This is why ignoring letters addressed to previous tenants... should not be ignored.. but returned to sender saying "No longer at this address"

    Saves alot of aggro.. as they will pursue them through telephone etc.

    I agree with neas - put them back in the post box marked "RTS no longer at this address" you could put "since __/__/__" if you want too.

    If you know the forwarding address I'd give that too - it will save you any hassle.
