My McAfee firewall and anti-spyware free trial has just run out and i dont really intend to renew it.
I have AVG free anti-virus, so that is not a problem, and have Windows defender for my anti-spyware.
But I am struggling to find a decent free firewall, I used to use Zonealarm, on my XP machine, but have always had problems with it on Vista.
Can anyone recommend some good free firewalls for Vista?

Never had any problems with ZA on Vista myself. As alternatives you could try Comodo Sunbelt (formerly Kerio) gets good reviews as well but isn't out on Vista yet. It's my problem, it's my problem

And it's my problem if I have no friends

No it's not as most outbound protection is turned off by defualt which is a very silly way of setting up a firewall. It's also a lot harder to configure than most of the 3rd party ones. Unless they changed things in SP1 but I don't remember hearing about it.
Here's how to change it but it's not that straightforward.

I use Vista Firewall Control from https://www.sphinx-soft.com which uses the build in firewall but allows easy control of outward bound programs. There is a freeware version available and I 've used it for several months without problem0
