I am having probs activating a dodgy copy of windows xp pro and the activation period is up tomorrow (Sunday). Is there any way I can install a copy of windows xp "home" over this without having to reformatt the hard drive etc. Or can anyone offer any advice on how to overcome the activation problem?

bossyboots...i would imagine so
anglojock i think youare going to struggle without reformatting....however you may be able to install Win XP Home in another location and then remove XP Pro from the Boot.ini and then remove it from the system.
although this isnt fullproof and will probably result in problems

I have reported it too. It is a pirate copy and therefore illegal.0 -

if he is deleting the old version and adding a legal copy then maybe he should amend the htread to state thatEx forum ambassador

Maybe I need to reword this. I want to install a legal copy of windows xp home over a preloaded copy of wndows xp pro which the activation period runs out tomorrow. Does this help?0

Just stick the "legal" copy of windows xp home into your CD drive (you need to set the BIOS to read from your CD drive first) and use it to reformat your hard disk (thus wiping the copy of XP pro). Then just install XP home and activate that. Upgrading OS's is problematic and not worth the hassle IMHO.
P.S. Not that I'd ever endorse such a thing and I'd be disgusted if you were to use a dodgy copy of XP  but copies of XP Pro Corporate Edition don't require product activation and additionally most P2P networks have a product activation program available for other versions of XP  .0
