Hp Laptop- Faulty bought on credit 2 repairs can I use Sales of Goods Act?

Hi,

I bought a HP laptop from a catalouge on credit it's model number is DV 9233EU.

I purchased it over a year ago, and I've had quite a few problems, its had 2 replacement motherboards, and although they have increased the warranty for 6 months ( runs out in August 2008 now) I am now having continual problems with re-boots, freezes, and the power unit on the laptop.

The battery it came with now lasts for less than 7 minutes, and they wont replace it as it's guarentee is only 1 year(given the laptop was running so hot it broke 2 motherboards you may of thought that heat would damage the battery).

I'm really fed up, I can't use the laptop in any kind of reliable way, I can't use it without a cable ( I have a PC, and bought the laptop to work away from a desk). It's unreliable, sometimes it starts and stops 7 times before actually properly starting up ( what that is doing to my harddrive I don't know).

I thought HP were a decent brand, and although they have made attempts to fix things, I feel they have sold me a defective product.

I want either a refund or a new laptop, ideally a different model that doesn't have the associated overheating problem.

Do I have any rights to do this as a consumer, and how would I go about it?

Thank you very much :)

Andy

There is lots of information on the Sale of Goods Act, not only on this excellent forum but also on the internet.

Yes you do have rights as a comsumer and there are plenty of websites which explain your rights and suggest courses of action.

When did the problems start and how long after that did you contact the seller and start the back and forth of the repairs? Have you kept detailled records of phon calls and letters between you and the seller? How did you pay for the goods?

Did you send the laptop directly back to HP or did you deal with the retailer?

You may also have a case against the provider of credit under s75 of the consumer credit act
