Feeling down, confused and scared!!

Hey,

I was just wondering if anyone else in their final year is feeling this, just so I don't feel so alone....

It's silly I guess really, but I'm coming to the end of my final year at uni, my dissertation deadline is looming and i'm just feeling a bit lost and scared, wishing I could go back to my first year, I think it's because I'm not 100% where I want to go after Uni, i'm thinking of teaching but I just feel scared cause I'm going to be leaving all my flatmates, they all live far away and I just wondered if anyone else felt like this in their final year or are feeling the same...any advice?

I feel the same! Im scared about graduating! Stressing about exams which are only 2 and half weeks away and i havent had time to revise because of dissertation! Arghhhhh I think its just because its like moving on to next step. I dont wanna leave uni lol! Well if you have a plan when you leave things you want to do atleast that way you'l have a goal to acheive i guess.

I think that is a very common feeling -certainly how I felt and also a lot of the people I knew. And including those who DID have a good idea of what they wanted to do after Uni!

I wouldn't advise rushing into teaching though. It is an amazing job but you have to be physically & mentally prepared for it and 100% sure it is what you want to do. I'd advise at least getting substantial school experience first (not just the 2 weeks some Uni's ask for!).

Just about every final year student I know is feeling the same way!

Have you asked the careers advisor, at your uni, for advice?

I'm afraid that this is how you feel if you haven't sorted out what you're going to do next. If you've got a job/training placement/postgrad place sorted then it's easier to look forward to new challenges and be less nostalgic for what you're leaving. If all you're doing is going back to live with mum and dad and starting to job hunt it's bound to be depressing.

Actually, this is how you feel in a transition phase - it's perfectly "normal" and in general those who don't feel the same way are either not letting themselves, didn't much enjoy university, are on a practice-based course with less sense of community or have already transited.

75% of my caseload at the moment is to do with this, often assisted by exam stress in making students feel really, really panicky. That's the same for students heading for Firsts and Thirds, with plans and without.

I can guarantee you a) that most of your friends are feeling the same and b) that your personal supervisor / tutor will have seen it all before. Your university or SU may be running relaxation and/or exam stress sessions that might be useful. Talking about it helps too, here or elsewhere!
