Upgrading to Sky+

Our Sky box is being a PITA, despite having tried the usual changing settings stuff, so I'm thinking of getting a new one (perhaps ebay?) If I get a Sky+ box, do I need to do anything other than plug it in? Do Sky still charge extra for Sky+?

They still charge £10 a month to use it's recording facility, unless you already subscribe to any package with them.;)

Sky+ needs 2 signals to be able to pause/rewind/record live TV so unfortunately its not as simple as buying a box & plugging it in.
You need a new LNB on your dish and another cable run from it into your box, you also need Sky to upgrade your subscription to receive Sky+ (nothing major they just have to send a signal to your box to activate it but can take up to 4 hours to start working!)
They don't charge £10 for Sky+ now but will probably charge for installation as well as the box, normally £99 for the box & between £50 & 60 install.
Best advice if you do want to go for Sky+ is wait for them to be doing a deal, £99 with free install etc or look for a "recommend a friend" deal, I think I recently had one through which was a free Sky+ box for both of you, but watch the small print as its normally only valid for new customers!
Or keep an eye out on Freecycle for a normal Sky box, plenty of people are getting rid of theirs as they upgrade to Sky+.

    .

Unless things have changed in the past few weeks, they certainly do still charge £10 a month, unless you are already a subscriber.;)

Why not try this - call sky, sat you're fed up with with them and their PITA box and that even though you might have considered sky+ last week you are now lookind at a rival company so could you be put through to the disconnections department. They have a duty to try to keep your subscription money coming in and in some cases can offer you the sky+ box and installation for FREE so long as you stay with them.

You used to have to have one of the premium channels (Sports or Movies) to get Sky+ for free or else pay £10 a month, but since July 2007 this was scrapped & even the cheapest £16 a month package is free of the £10 fee.
If anyone has Sky+ & even just one of the entertainment mixes & is still paying £10 a month on top they need to call Sky & get a refund!!

Yep, go with agarr's suggestion, I've done the same thing twice now, I just said I intended to go to BT Vision. Went through the disconnections department told them I wanted to leave as I could get the same service through BT with a free similar recording box. They said as a loyal customer they would provide a sky + box free of charge with connection. I told them I wanted to pay the same subscription and insisted they updated the system accordingly to reflect that my DD amount wouldnt increase...sorted !

I did the same for my mother, she also got the same deal, they obviously want to keep the business.

    This worked for us too..

We were able to get a refurbished sky+ box for free with no installation charge. When they arrived to install it they brought a brand new one because they did not have any refurbished ones in stock and we still paid nothing..:D
