London.. cheap?

Long before the debt worries, I booked coach tickets for my and my son's girlfriend, to go to London National Gallery for the day. It's next week. We're meeting up with some friends - none of us have a lot of money and I'm wondering how we can eat on the cheap, cheap? All of us are disabled (apart from son's girl), and will have to stick around Trafalgar Square. (I think thats where the Nat gallery is? Never been London before)
Someone suggested taking our own sandwhiches, but as we're all coming from far away, by the time we get there a packed lunch isn't going to be very appetizing is it? Plus we can't be weighed down by bags (cos of disabilities).

So - any ideas for cheap eating near to the National gallery please?;)

Oh and what about taxi fares? We'll need one from the Victoria Coach station to the National Gallery. I don't think I can manage the walk I'm afraid. :-(

If you and your friends like japanese style food - then go to a Waggamama's.
They are around 7 to 8 GBP per main meal, large portions and really tasty..

    I LOVE Waga's!!!!

Enjoy London and I hope the sun stays for you...

  • If you check out www.tfl.gov.uk that’ll tell you how best to get around, but I think if there’s 4-5 of you, it’ll be cheaper than getting a bus or tube (assuming you don’t have oyster cards!). TfL says 38 mins walk, I think about ten minutes/2 miles in a taxi, which hopefully shouldn’t cost more than £8 (I don’t take taxis any more but just trying to remember!)

Depending on how cheap you need it to be, at the top of Whitehall (where it joins Trafalgar square), there is a Little Frankie’s, which does a lunch special menu and is such good value for that area and it’s very yum, kind of Italian-US cuisine, about £5 for cooked lunch like burgers and pizza I think, not sure about cheap-cheap places round there though as you are in tourist land, someone else might know somewhere!
  • You could go to Chinatown (just behind Trafalgar Square, 2 mins walk) where there are lots of yummy cheap Chinese restaurants, and lots of them do lunch deals.
    Have a fun day out!

Last time I was in the National Gallery (which admittedly was a few years back!) they had a Pret a Manger inside the gallery itself. Lovely sandwiches and coffee and cake....uummmm... prob £7-£8 for all of the above but really nice and fresh. Have a good trip !
  • If you just wanted a sandwich there's a Pret A Manger opposite the national portrait gallery. Also across the road from Pret is a little street with a ton of cheaper cafes/pizza places on. A Black cab from victoria will be about £10 depending on traffic, but singles on the tube are £4 now so a cab is probably the cheapest option.
    Save me from spending...

Isn't there a small Tesco (Express or Metro) near Trafalgar Square. Much cheaper than Pret and Waga! It depends on what you want really!

PS I do like Pret stuff though, but it isn't very cheap!

Edit: Yes there is Charing Cross Express. SW1A 2DR
    .....

  • I 2nd Chinatown, but if you want an 'english' try Porters in Covent Garden, about a 3min level walk from Trafalgar Square, and doing a 2 couse lunch for £6, it is advisalble to book in advance which you can do via their website here

  • Thanks so much. They all sound great but I think it will be Porters. I've looked at the menu, scrummy sounding to me!

I'll let you know what we have.... (those meals are making me hungry now).

Really looking forward to this, hope to see Buckingham Palace, all Brits should see that I suppose ;)

Just a thought, don't forget Boots 'meal deal' (drink, snack + sandwich for £2.99) - great for the coach home.
