COM surrogate

Whenever I open a folder containing video files, I get a pop-up telling me that COM surrogate has stopped working, and if I try to play a video file it won't work until I have had to close COM surrogate.
Is COM surrogate important in any way? As it just seems to cause me problems. It never used to happen, just started in the last few weeks. Is there a way I can stop this happening, or jsut get rid of COM surrogate?
