Taxation Class

Hey all, I've recently got my car tax renewal form through.

I've been reading up on the owners forum about my car and people are paying different tax amounts I think this is down to the taxation class..

Can someone explain the difference between;

Private light Goods (PLG)
Petrol Car

*My car is an import, the irregularity comes from when the car is first registered with the DVLA.
I would have used my own initiative if someone would have told me to!

    Private Light Goods is the taxation class
    Petrol refers to the fuel type.

    No, they are both taxation classes, I've checked this on the DVLA site but it doesn't tell you what each one is..

    Anyone help?

    Hey

    -PLG is for vehicles registered before March 2001 and is taxed on engine size.

    -Petrol/Diesel car is for vehicles registered after March 2001 and is taxed on CO2 emissions

    If your imported car was registered after March 2001 it can still be in PLG tax class if there were no CO2 emissions recorded for vehicle at time of registration cos it would default to engine size and PLG class.

    Thanks, that makes sense.. My car is a '53' and was registered in November 2007 making it a 'Petrol Car'

    Thanks ;)

    Just received this email from the DVLA regarding this ;

    A vehicle registered under the taxation class PLG are usually registered before March 1st 2001. The maximum a PLG car would be charged for vehicle tax for 12 months is £185. A petrol cars vehicle tax is determined on its CO2 emissions. A car registered on or after March 1st 2001 is placed in the petrol car taxation class when the emissions details are captured. Please familiarise yourself with the form V149 which you can download from the website below which has a full breakdown of the vehicle tax rates.

    Out of interest, does anyone know if the DVLA accepts American Express for payment? I've got the 5% cashback Amex and would like to get the cashback on the £185 renewal (actually, they charge £2.50 if you use a credit card, but that would still reduce it to c. £178).

    Well, to answer my own question: no they don't. I paid for my car tax online yesterday. The credit cards they listed did not include American Express. They add 2.5% to the bill if you use a credit card, so I elected to pay by Debit Card, for which there is no charge.
