Does a gargage charge for storage by the day?

Hi Guys,
My G/F was involved in a car accident last Monday and the local gargae came and took the car away. She didn't call them and she just went along with it as she was shaken and upset and didn't know what to do.
Anyway, over the weekend someone has suggested to me that they charge £20 a day just to store the car. I have been their 3 times, her mum once and I have spoken to them on the phone. When the car was picked up they simply gave my g/f a card to say where the car was.
Could this be true, can they really charge us this amount per day even though we were never told of it?

yes most places can charge whatever they like
they will be hoping to pass the costs onto insurance or waive the fee if you have the repairs done there, its a bargaining point for them to persuade the insurance to use them and if they dont its a nice earner
£20 a day is a bit strong...our place was £5 odd0
