Not Sound As A Pound

  • I can't roll them back unfortunately as I uninstalled the old ones when I downloaded the latest versions :(

Latest issue is that Windows Media Player will not even play music anymore! Before it would play the file but with no sound.....this is really doing my head in now!

BTW- no new hardware added recently.
  • Just had a thought (not bad for this time of a Saturday!).

I am currently running XP SP1 but have the SP2 CD. If I update to SP2 would that be likely to re-examine the hardware on my comp and fix this onboard sound problem?

Alternatively, I have a (legal) copy of XP Pro. Is it worth upgrading to this and would this be likely to fix the issue? (Tied in with this, if I did upgrade to Pro, would I still be able to run my SP2 disk to upgrade the Pro version?)

I have used the MSI Live Monitor to ensure I have the latest drivers - I do and now I am stuck.
Chances are that the utility is only checking for drivers on MSI's own servers, and not elsewhere. Have you tried checking out VIA Arena for driver updates?

Additionally, before installing SP2, you might want to try going to Start>Run and entering "sfc /scannow" to have Windows' System File Checker scan for missing or corrupted system files.
  • Tanglefoot - thanks for the reply.

I have had the drivers from the VIA website as well - to no avail.

I ran the SFC check, no problems there and have uninstalled/reinstalled the drivers and removed/added the sound through device manager. WMP now plays my music, I just don't get any sound!

I'm really at a loss as to what could have done this in the first place as it worked fine up until last night! It's not as though I've buggered atround with my system or added any new programmes either
  • OK, have got fed up with trying to sort this, so have just bought a new soundcard from Novatech (and treated myself to some new speakers as well :)) but still am none the wiser as to why the comp would suddenly stop playiing music!
