I recently returned from my holiday in Lanzarote and i went to 3 seperate cash points to withdraw cash as the exchange rate was so low.
My Halifax Debit card statement shows that i had taken 110 euros out 3 times in one day when in fact i only got the exchange rate and cancelled. ??? I taken 110 euros out at the last cash machine.
If i tell Halifax do they believe me or help me?

You will have to start a disputed ATM transaction with Halifax.
This will take several weeks and a lot will depend on the balancing of the Spanish ATM.
I personally have not come across an ATM that would give me an exchange rate - is this something new?0 -
This happened to my hubby in Majorca last May. We bank with Citibank and used a Santander cash machine. He cancelled the transaction part way through but it still took the funds from our account. We contacted Citibank who asked us to put it in writing with as much detail as possible (location, time, etc). Within a couple of weeks the funds were credited back to our account.
Contact your bank urgently and they will tell you the procedure to follow.0 -
Thank you. The bank was contacted and they said the dispute will take about 4 weeks. How can they prove the money didnt come out?
Thanks for lettin me know about yur experience.0 -

Every day the cash machines are checked to make sure there is as much money in them as there should be. If it's out then they have to look into the reasons.0 -

Some banks (e.g. Santander in Spain) have put a feature into their cash machines that give you the option of the ATM's bank converting to sterling (at a fee and poor exchange rate) or allowing your bank to do it. The advantage of allowing the ATM to convert is you know exactly how much, in sterling, you will be charged.jonesMUFCforever wrote: »I personally have not come across an ATM that would give me an exchange rate - is this something new?
This also occurs in shops. You should be given a choice of paying in sterling or local currency (or just being offered local currency).
Best option is to get a Nationwide debit/credit card and always choose to pay in local currency. Nationwide use an inter-bank exchange rate and don't charge anything.0 -
ok, thanks. Thats something i'll look into as well brucey
