Dissonecting and reconnection wires on a bt extension socket.

Hi everybody,

Further to an earlier theread of mine on which I sought advice on disconnecting and reconnecting the wires on a phone socket such as the 3 picture down on this page

http://www.wppltd.demon.co.uk/WPP/Wiring/UK_telephone/uk_telephone.html

I am now a little confussed as to what I have got is really a master socket or just an extension though it looks just like the master socket 3 pic down on above page. I have found a further socket in cloakroom where the wiring to the one I want to disconnect comes from. This other socket is just a little box with no place to hook in a phone or anything just a wire coming from it to the socket I need to work with.

I'd be gratfeul If someone could please clarify if what I've got and need to disconnect wires temporary from is really the master or just an extension.

also the wires I need to disconnect on the consumer side have connectors of the insulation displacement type (not screws)

how do I go about disconnecting and connecting those?

thanks if you have time to reply to me,

tina

The small socket you are talking about sounds like a joint box wherby BT have used it to extend a cable or create an extension within your house without having to bring in new cables to your property

You need a little plastic tool Maplins sell them for about £2

The master socket from BT is split in two at the face the front bottom slides off to show a single phone socket on the back plate thats the test point connected directly to BT only . The smaller boxes are just junction boxes .

Be aware that the connecting the number 3 wire is likely to slow your Internet Connection, if you have one.

    More info here: DSL Zone

I disconnected mine and doubled my speed instantly. Now syncing at 7709kbps from 38**kbps previously.

    Pull hard to disconnect.
To reconnect, use £2 tool as advised above or £8 proper Krone tool.
