Could be a few things, cable connection between the laptop and screen has come loose, brightness has been turned down if it's got a button on the outside.

There are some laptops such as dell's that have special keys to change displays, I believe dells are the Fn + F8 keys together.

You could also connect to your PC monitor or TV to see if it's just the screen that's broken and nothing else

Can you try shining a bright light into the screen, if you can see an part of an image then you will know it's the cable to the backlight that's the problem.

How old is the laptop and what make is it, some cables can split after many thousands of times being folded back and forward.

If you've got some small screwdrivers it shouldn't be too difficult to get to them.

A common problem that I encounter with laptops in my job is the backlight inverter die's, this can be fixed quite easily if have the tools and the skill, but if your not savvy with electronics I would recommend you take it to a reputable engineer to repair it for you.

If it's under warranty then get it back to them ASAP and don't open it up as that will give them an excuse not to fix it, you can save anything from the hard drive by connecting it to a tv or monitor to see what you are doing.
