I am absolutely horrified by my latest gas bill so can anyone help me with this please.

last years gas bill for same period aprox 30th dec - 29th march 07 gas units used 169

Had a new meter installed by british gas on the 18th December so units started at 0015 according to the meter card i was left at the time and
new bill
15th dec - 17th dec 07 (3day) 11 units used

18th Dec - 17th jan 08 units used 237
18th jan 08 - 7th april 08 gas units used 541

This cant be right can it? I had a new combi boiler fitted in June 07 - which is more efficient isnt it? I know gas prices have gone up but surely my consumption hasnt jumped that much or am I understanding the bills wrong.

my electric usage has gone down by 2 units for the same periods.

I am totally baffled by it

It is most likely that your old meter was an imperial one measuring in 100's of cubic feet and your new one is a metric one measuring in cubic metres (possibly marked m3 on meter). A cubic metre is approx 3 times smaller than 100 cubic feet. So if what I am saying is correct your units used will be 3 times higher than last year.
However this does not mean that your bill will be 3 times higher because they convert the units into kwh and there are different formulae for the different types of meter.
This assumes also that your supplier knows what type of meter is fitted.

As an afterthought if you post the kwh from your latest bill for the dates that you quote the units used we can tell if everything is OK, also confirm if your meter has m3 on it.

I think the previous post is correct, check your bills and look for the Kilowatt hours used, not the units.

I have just received my final (hooray !) gas bill from BG, my consumption since 12 Nov has averaged 9 units (m 3) per day; yours since Dec 15, assuming a metric meter, comes to just under 8 per day - which is fine, your useage is quite reasonable.

You are just confusing yourself with two different types of meter.

    looking at last years quarter
    30 dec 06 - 11 march 07 433.4 kilowatt hours over 72 days
    12 march - 29 mar 07 1011.47 kilowatt hours over 17 days

    new bill.
    15th dec - 17 dec 345.76 kilowatt hours over 3 days

    18 dec - 17 jan 2635.12 kilowatt hours over 31 days

    18 jan - 7 april 6015.19 liowatt hours over 80 days

I can see what you are saying that its not really the units that count. I did ring BG this morning and they said the new meters go round faster and are more efficient and if I want it checking it will cost up to £60 if they find there isnt a fault on the meter. Cant see a m3 but maybe its hidden somewhere.

    Thanks for your help

i have a query with my bill to, my last bill worked out that we were using £55 a month! theres only me living in our flat during the week, i have heating on for about 3 hours a day to dry clothes and thats it, all other appliances are electric. i called my previouse supplier and asked them how many units i usually used per day they said 8, with BG it works out that im useing 24units a day.
i only used to pay £30 a month with the previouse supplier and had £50 returened when i switched because i was in credit, any ideas?

If you have just had a new meter fitted it should look very like the one on page 3 of this:-

Hi Hilary. All is clear. From 15 to 17 dec the 11 units used were Cu feet, so your old meter was imperial.
From 18 dec to 17 jan, and 18 jan to 7 april the units were cubic meters, so new meter is metric. That explains why you are using more units, but your bill should not be much different from last year (if your supplier knows you have a metric meter)

They are correct to say that new meters go round faster, but the more efficient bit is bullsh**.

If you want to confirm this your self, multiply cu feet units by 31.5 to get Kwh, and multiply cubic meter units by 11 to get Kwh.

Just to add that of course BG know you have a metric meter because the last bill has been presented correctly.
