I have a sony vaio laptop, which has a connection in order for me to connect to an external monitor, ie, a plasma/lcd tv.
Ive been wondering if this connection port would allow me to use the laptop screen as a display, if so I would connect my xbox 360 to it.

No you cannot but if you attach a USB TV card to the machine then you will be able to play the xbox 360 through it .0
