Can anyone advise?

My mother is in her 70`s and she gets income support, housing benefit and pension credits, she has a little money in the bank and is worried as she has been informed by a neighbour that she is not allowed to have any saving`s. I am sure she is allowed more than the 600 she currently has but, could some one please advise so I can put her mind at rest? Many thanks Jacqui

    Hello,

Tell her to stop worrying :o

A single person is allowed up to £3,000 of savings in the bank before benefits are touched. This neighbour doesn't know what she is talking about. Tell your Mum to relax.

The lower capital limit is now £6000.

Just found a link that says Savings over £3,000 (£6,000 if you or your partner are aged 60 or over) affect how much Housing Benefit you can get. From 10 April 2006, this will increase to £6,000 for all.

    I stand corrected it's £3,000 if under 60 but £6,000 if over 60.

No that is wrong it is £6000 for under 60s.
The information above is from March 2005 and now out of date.
