Am feeling like this could be a wind up?

If you are genuine, and you are only doing it for religious reasons, then I would take advice from members of your religious community, as changing your name from Miss to Mrs will not make a bit of difference!
    Gone ... or have I?

Calling yourself "Mrs" will cause you nothing but grief. You'll be asked constantly to provide proof you're single. "Ms" would be far better. As for it sounding more respectable, it doesn't but what it does do when you're looking at/are dating someone is make you look like an adulterer...

The change of name isn't a problem however you'll need to put your previous name you were known by on any application.

It will make not one iota of difference to your benefits.

IMO the title for all women should be Ms -after all men only have one title which means you can't distinguish their marital status.
I'll get you, my pretty, and your little dog too!
