Not sure what to do

Well my marriage is over and we are seperated, I want to know what am i going to do about money.. He earns 27000 a year and i earn 6000, we have a morgage of 660 a month. He has agreed to pay 300 a month for the children and half the morgage and bills. Do i contact the tax credit people to get them to look into my allowance? They overpaid me last year by 1000 and i havent had child tax credit for the last 8 months and am not due any til july then it will be 43 a month. Would the fact that we are seperated mean i would get more now or when the next review is done! Bit confused really....
Any help would be great. I have 3 children and work part time 23 hrs a week.
Thanks in advance.

His £27000 salary = £1695 take home if he pays no pension contributions. Less obviously if he does so.

    £300 for kids
    £330 for mortgage
£200 or so for half of bills i would guess? (council tax, gas, electric etc)

That would be leaving him with around £950pm. Is he likely to be able to survive off this? New rent for him, council tax, bills, food, car etc etc.

    You have a £6000 salary = £485pm + his £730 contribution above = £1215pm

So you'll have quite a bit more than him and thats not taking into account any benefits you will get from CB/ CTC and WTC. I would imagine this to be quite a lot considering you have 3 kids and on a lone income of only £6000. However any money he gives to you, ie the £730 will have to be declared.

You are going to be very well off, your husband will be poor.

The answer to your question is, you can phone them up now and update your circumstances.

If you qualify for full CTC which i believe you will, you will receive the child elements of CTC at £2085x3 + £545 per year family element so £6800pa in CTC, which works out at £566pm CTC + £190.23 in CB = £756pm

Add this onto your £1215pm from above, and you'll be raking in around £2000pm.

Additional to that, not sure whether you will also receive WTC on top of this amount, i assume you will do on an income of £6k so you can potentially be very well off by splitting from your hubby on an income more than most.

Yes let HMRC know. They'll stop the joint claim and you'll have to claim as a lone parent and any award will be based on your own income. They don't recover overpayments from a joint claim from your single claim.
There are some knowlegeable subscribers from HMRC on this forum so they'll be along soon to give advice I'm sure
I'll get you, my pretty, and your little dog too!

 yes mitchaa, she will be rich, ex will be poor

She'll also be bringing 3 kids up on her own for which he SHOULD be providing!!

OP I think that you have to work 30 hours for WTC but I would call them for advice. You can also try the *do I qualify* form on the HMRC website.

    Hope you are ok :D

Erm yes, she will be rich in comparison to her ex who will have £950pm left over from his salary where as she will be in receipt of around double this amount.

Legally, all he is obliged to pay is 25% of his net salary so £423pm. Less if he sees them at weekends.

Quite a bit different to paying £300pm child maintenance, mortgage and half of bills which would work out around £730. I.e en extra £310pm at the very least.

Im just trying to show her, she will be considerably well off from this split as CTC will provide a great whack of her income. Something she wasn't entitled to before due to her hubbys income.

Thanks for the comments, it wasnt my idea for him to pay but he is in the military and as for rent its 300 a month, and food is included. Also his council tax as well. Maybe i should just ring them and see what i will be entitled too and then maybe he wont need to provide so much. I just want to have a house and for the kids to be ok... I will still work.

As you've got kids, you only need to work 16hrs per week to claim wtc, not 30 as stated above. Don't worry about the comments about you being rich and your ex being poor - you can always renegotiate once you've sorted out your tax credits etc and know where you stand and how much you need to live on. Seperating from a partner is never an easy option - and one I'm sure you didn't take to be financially better off.

kimmie ~ dont feel you have to jutify the arrangements that you and your ex have made. You hear all too much about the dads that wont provide and I'm astounded that someone is having a pop at one who wants to.

Fair play to your ex for taking care of his responsibilities and also to you in looking at renegotiating when everything is dotted and crossed.

jay ~ thanks for correcting me re the hours and TC's, I wasnt convinced it was right when I was typing it :D
