I have recenty taken out a Thomas Cook credit card to pay for a holiday with 3 months free credit. I hace just had my first statement on which they have made a LATE CHARGE ASSESSMENT OF £12 -OUCH!

Is this an error which I should take up with Cooks/Barclays or did I not read the small print?

    Which payment method did you use? Did you allow enough time for your payment to clear?

    It probably means you have made a late payment or none at all.
    If a card is interest free you are still required to make minimum payments as defined in the T+Cs.
    Do you think there may have been a statement, prior to this one, asking for a payment?
    If you are sure this is your first statement then they have made a mistake.

    Also, Thomas Cook cards are run by MBNA. They are notorious for removing 0% deals if you make a late payment.

    I believe them to be run by Thomas Cook Financial Services which is a 50/50 joint venture with Barclays. So it likely they are processed by Barclaycard.

    Either way, sounds like you've mistaken "interest free period" with "no payment period", so yeah think you've dropped the ball. Best bet is to call their customer services people (number on back of the card), explain the situation and ask for them to set up a direct debit and to reinstate the 0% period - there are various other threads reporting success on this if you ask nicely and it's a first default.

    Unlucky!

    They are relying on you not making a payment in time so that they can charge you £12 and remove your promotional period.

    I'm afraid the error was probably on your part.

    But, call them up, apologize and explain that you made an honest mistake and they may well reinstate your promotional period and may even refund you the £12 charge.

    However, if you miss another payment, I suspect that the chances of reversing the situation will be much more unlikely.

    Are you confusing '3 months free credit' for '3months of no payments'???

    3 months free credit would normally mean you don't pay interest on any outstanding balance for that period of time, but you do still need to make a minimum payment to the account.
