animation program?

Can anyone point me in the direction of an animation program please?
Currently my son uses GIF but am sure there is something better out there!

As far as I know GIF is just a file format not an animation program (I don't know of any that use the same name as the file format). Do you know what program he does use at the moment (presumably to create the GIFs)?

I was recently playing around with claymation and this program is designed originally as an image animator (from scanner webcam or DV camera) seems pretty cool for a freebie. Not sure if it will work if he actually draws on the computer though.

If you have an 'elements' version of Photoshop you can make simple GIF animations. Or in the full version you can use image ready to do the same.
You can get an old version of elements from ebay cheap and it is pretty effective.

Blender is difficult to learn, but the best free 3D software available.

If you are looking for a 2D animation program that's easy to use, I recommend Cutout Pro Stickman (http://www.cutoutpro.com).

The best 2D software out there is probably Flash. Or if you want 3D then look at Maya. Hope this helps
