Hi - I am about to buy a Dell laptop and was wondering if there was any significant difference between a Intel Pentium Dual Core T2370 and a Intel Core 2 Duo T5550.
I plan on using the laptop for browsing, office and the odd game like civilisation and command & conquer. (So i can play my son online)
Thanks

There really isn't much between them. The T5550 is 100Mhz faster which is nothing in todays PC's
T2370 1.73GHz
T5550 1.83GHz0 -
The 5550 also has a faster FSB, so that coupled with the ram running at the faster speed will give it a noticeable boost. Bear in mind that they're dual-core, so it's two lots of 100mhz, and two lots of faster FSB, etc.
The 5550 also has double the cache. It's not as simple as pure mhz unfortunately. They say it's genetic, they say he can't help it, they say you can catch it - but sometimes you're born with it0 -
For what the OP wants it for there isn't much difference at all.0

You're both right; Weegie is absolutely correct that it's more than MHz and the extra cache as well as the higher front-side bus (FSB) will make a considerable difference. TLP is correct that there'll be little difference seen by the OP for what he has stated.
So the 2 things to consider are budget and headroom. I think the T5550 is worth about £30 more than the T2370 so if the difference in the price of your 2 target notebooks is more than that, go for the cheaper notebook. But the main issue is headroom, that is 6 months down the line will you be doing other things like video editing or ripping lots of music; in which case it might be worth getting the T5550.
Happy Shopping!0 -
I'd go for the T5550 unless it is significantly more expensive. It won't be much much different for most thigns but could help if you are playing games.
What Graphics cards do they have in as that will be significant if you want ot play games on them? Unless you're playing very old versions of C&C and Civ.It's my problem, it's my problem
If I feel the need to hide
And it's my problem if I have no friends
And feel I want to die0 -
Be careful with the operating system too. I really had to fudge c&c red alert 2 to work on Vista but cannot get network gaming to work because of ipx/spx.0

Thanks all - went for the T5550 as it only worked out at £20 more for the spec I wanted with 2G RAM, and remembered that my youngest son has just got a camcorder and has started editing videos with it, so the extra processing power might be handy0

Not much, they are both "Pentium Class" cpu's and are both very good, a wise choice over AMD and Intel Celeron low end chips.Hi - I am about to buy a Dell laptop and was wondering if there was any significant difference between a Intel Pentium Dual Core T2370 and a Intel Core 2 Duo T5550.

ThanksSince when has the world of computer software design been about what people want? This is a simple question of evolution. The day is quickly coming when every knee will bow down to a silicon fist, and you will all beg your binary gods for mercy.0
