Some friend guidance needed! First time renting my own house!

Ok i currently live with friends who pay for all the electric gas etc and i give them a fixed amount per month, in the first year of uni i was in student accomodation so similar applied ( now in 2nd year ).

A few questions!

1) If i am to pay for *exactly* what i use on a monthly basis without being over / undercharged based on some stupid "average" figures what is the best way to do this ( provide my actual usage to the company each month or use a pre payment meter with someone like ebico who dont charge for the privelidge? )

2) Are there any basic ( clever ) tips you can provide me when it comes to electric // gas usage. ( defrosting freezer for example )

3) I was planning on getting an additional tenant in a few months to cover 50% of the cost of living in this house, however only my name will be on the contract for the house, im not going to be taxed on this as a source of income am i if its going straight on his half of the rent?

    Hi Box...
    The national average for gas use is 20,000kwhs and for electric 3300. Less for a flat or mid terrace. Prices roughly are gas 3p and electric 10pence..so you are talking just under £1000 per year.
    A low user would be £500p.a or less.
    Ebico do not do a tiered pricing system so ideal for low users and your are correct is saying they charge the same for prepay as for credit meters.
    Appliances like tumble driers and electric fires and really anything with a heating element are expensive to run.
    How is your new place heated? Gas is cheapest and the annual safety check is the responsibility of the landlord. Also the landlord might not allow you to sub-let.
    Reading the other posts going back as far as you can and also reading the stickies is time well spent.
    Take readings when you move in and regular reading thereafter.
    Dont' have info in prepay meters but make sure they are updated regularly with the right tariff changes.

    From reading other posts, I can second this regarding pre-pay meters...

    If prices go up and the supplier doesn't get around to updating the meter with the new rates, you are (currently) still liable for the extra.
